Review
A star rating of 4 out of 5.
Steve Morrissey
A woman in a monkey suit and a man who's just tried to kill himself set off across the desert together, so they can disinter a valuable watch from his father's grave and sell it to raise money for an inflatable banana boat. It's not your average elevator pitch but the result is a refreshingly bizarre road movie, full of foul language and big laughs. In her second feature directorial effort (after 2012's Her Master's Voice), Nina Conti has effectively re-purposed her comedy-ventriloquism stage act - often featuring a character called Monkey - and along with co-writer and co-star Shenoah Allen turned him/it into a vehicle for a meditation on taking control, second chances and the power of the mask to say otherwise unsayable things. It's also a funny little love story, with the two stars often riffing off each other's ad-libs (and teetering on the edge of corpsing). Christopher Guest is an executive producer, and that's where this film sits, in the semi-improv box with This Is Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind, though Conti has a grasp of the surreal that's all her own.
