Set against the backdrop of the nascent Showa era, this is a bruising insight into the unforgiving underworld of 1920s Japan. Pardoned during an amnesty, Tatsuya Nakadai returns to discover his ambitious brother, Noboru Ando, has not only arranged a merger between their Enokiya gang and their deadly Kannon rivals, but has also planned a Manchurian railroad takeover that could spell disaster for his partners in crime. Although it ends with a ferocious moonlight swordfight, the emphasis in this stylish, simmering thriller is more on the bushido influence on yakuza culture, with its strict sense of clan loyalty and honour.
