The director of Taken, Pierre Morel, is at the helm of this so-so action comedy. John Cena plays Mason Pettits, a US special forces operative-turned-lawyer and family man. Dissatisfied with his life, he's approached by an old army buddy (Christian Slater) to take on a private-security gig, protecting journalist Claire (Alison Brie) as she interviews Juan Venegas (Juan Pablo Raba), the leader of a (fictional) South American country. But soon after arrival, Mason and Claire find themselves in the middle of a coup. Though Freelance develops from pumped-up and patriotic to more politically clued-up, it's an uneven effort that feels both rushed and overlong. Cena's flat performance weighs things down and there's a pitifully underwritten role for Alice Eve as Mason's wife. However, the film is near-salvaged by a charismatic turn from Raba as the affable dictator who upends Mason's assumptions. Whether traversing the jungle in a spotless suit or pouring a round of drinks during a shoot-out, Raba's broadly comedic presence comes close to making this all worthwhile.
