British director Emerald Fennell's follow-up to her incendiary and Oscar-winning Promising Young Woman is a spectacularly spiky thriller. A variant on Patricia Highsmith's The Talented Mr Ripley, it introduces awkward Oxford University student Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan), who forms an unlikely friendship with good-looking toff Felix Catton (Jacob Elordi). When he is invited back to the Cattons' sprawling ancestral home, Saltburn, for the summer, Quick gets a taste for how the other half live. Felix's sister Venetia (Alison Oliver) compares him to a moth, "quiet, harmless, drawn to shiny things," but she's wrong in one crucial respect, and he soon starts to show his true colours. What follows is a blackly funny satire of the dreadfully rich, which gradually tips over into something much darker. The cast, which includes Richard E Grant, a cameoing Carey Mulligan and a scene-stealing Rosamund Pike as Felix's mother, are excellent. Though the film proves a little too invested in its own shocking reveals, you won't forget them in a hurry.
