Anime master Kenji Kamiyana (Ghost in the Shell) brings his talents to bear on JRR Tolkien in this two-hour-plus epic. With original Rings supremo Peter Jackson as one of the producers, the metamorphosis from live action to an animated Middle-earth is seamless. Set 200 years before Frodo's ring-bearing adventures, this tells the story of King Helm Hammerhand (Brian Cox) and his daughter Hèra (Gaia Wise). If the name "Helm" sounds familiar, it's because Helm's Deep featured prominently in the gigantic battles of The Two Towers; here's how the giant rocky fortress earned its name. Inventive direction and storytelling make this a propulsive, thrilling experience, although the simplistic character designs sometimes clash uncomfortably with the hyper-real (and familiar) landscapes of Rohan. Once you get used to the dissonance, however, you can relax and enjoy Cox's towering performance. He's every inch as commanding and empathetic as Bernard Hill's fellow king, Théoden, from the original trilogy. Fittingly, this is dedicated to the latter's memory.
