Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Based on the Jojo Moyes novel of the same name, this sometimes entertaining, mostly formulaic romantic drama stars Felicity Jones as a journalist attempting to uncover the story behind a series of love letters from 1965. In present-day London, Ellie (Jones) enlists her newspaper's archivist Rory (Nabhaan Rizwan) to help her find the two lovers. Meanwhile, in the 1960s, married socialite Jennifer Stirling (Shailene Woodley) is suffering from amnesia as the result of a car accident, and is trying to fill in the gaps in her memory. The twists and turns of her affair with journalist Anthony O'Hare (Callum Turner), charted in the letters Ellie discovers, offer high fashion but lukewarm chemistry between the pair, and the plot veers into unconvincing melodrama by the third act. On the plus side, Jones hasn't been this comically endearing since 2011's Chalet Girl, and her love story with Rizwan proves far more charming than the one their characters spend so long investigating.
