Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

In this combination of time-travel adventure and splattery shoot-'em-up, the Earth of 2051 has been devastated by aliens, but the creation of a wormhole back to the year 2022 provides a ray of hope as a squadron is sent to help rescue humanity. Chris Pratt plays the army veteran and struggling research scientist who's drafted to help the war effort, leaving behind his wife and daughter, as well as a broken relationship with his conspiracy-theorist dad (JK Simmons, stealing every scene). Worse is to come when the enemy is revealed in its full scaly, fast-moving, spike-firing horror. Cue outstanding large-scale action set pieces, which give the movie a high-impact midsection, until the plot gets tangled in contrivances and the excitement falters. Still, Pratt acquits himself well, delivering the required square-jawed heroism and worried family-man emotion, and, despite sundry questionable moments, the Aliens and Terminator-style thrills are hard to resist. Amiable popcorn fare, then, but a little more creative effort might have made this really special.
