Our Score
Cecil B DeMille's onetime assistant David MacDonald returned to his native Scotland for this tempestuous melodrama from the husband-and-wife screenwriting team of Sydney and Muriel Box. While Stephen Dade's images of Skye are highly evocative, precious little passion is generated by orphaned Patricia Roc and Andrew Crawford, even though she's the housekeeper of his deadliest rival (Finlay Currie). Part of the problem is the straightlaced nature of postwar British cinema, which kept emotions firmly in check. Yet Roc is also miscast as the free-spirited waif whose charms melt the stolid hearts of Currie's sons (Maxwell Reed and Andrew Macrae).

An orphan girl goes to stay with a fishing family on Skye, where her presence causes jealousy, superstition and tragedy. Drama, starring Patricia Roc, Maxwell Reed and Duncan Macrae.
