Beyond

A couple's topsy-turvy relationship is played out against the end of the world in this intriguing alien-invasion drama. It's a flashback-driven tale that jumps back and forth throughout - from Richard J Danum and Gillian MacGregor's tentative first meeting to their undisguised hostility as they scavenge for food (and hope) in the deserted but beautifully shot Scottish countryside. However, sci-fi fans expecting a life-or-death action yarn bursting with effects-laden destruction will be disappointed, as the low-key (and low-budget) focus here is on their characters: ordinary people who are desperate to avoid capture by the District 9-like spaceships hovering above, so they can locate their missing child. The plot does take some unexpected turns that won't appeal to everyone, but their reaction to work, family and personal responsibility as the world goes to pot will definitely touch a chord.
