Pokémon Legends Z-A multiplayer: How does it work?

Does Pokémon Legends Z-A continue the series’ rich history of offering multiplayer functionality? You've come to the right place to find out.
While we may have evolved from Link Cables to Wi-Fi, Pokémon has always had a heavy focus on trading and battling with friends, and the newest instalment is no different.
So, what's the deal with Pokémon Legends Z-A multiplayer? Allow us to explain!
Does Pokémon Legends Z-A have multiplayer?
Yes, we're pleased to report that Pokémon Legends Z-A does have multiplayer!
The game includes multiplayer battle functionality, as well as the option to engage in ranked battles with your chosen team of Pokémon.
It also allows you to trade Pokémon with a friend, helping you each fill up your Pokédex.
How to unlock multiplayer in Pokémon Legends Z-A
You’ll need to meet Mable, who will unlock the Rewards feature for you, in order to access Link Play in Pokémon Legends Z-A.
This happens during one of the game's main missions, so you can't miss it!
Nintendo’s support page estimates you can unlock it within an hour or two, which sounds about right.
Once that’s done, press ‘X’ and then select ‘Link Play’. From here, there are a few options.
How does multiplayer work in Pokémon Legends Z-A?
Ranked Battles will see you face off against other Pokémon trainers in the world to try and climb the ranks to be the best (like no one ever was).
Private Battles can be played locally (Nearby) or online (Faraway), letting you create a room for friends to join so you can pit your team of Pokémon against theirs.
Finally, Link Trade also works locally or over the internet, letting you trade your Pokémon with your friend.
