Episode 1: Harlots: Ep 101 - Episode 1

Summary

Brothel owner Margaret Wells is on the threshold of moving into a more up-market house in Soho when her premises are raided by the nightwatchmen. Fined for keeping an obscene and bawdy house and unable to make the final payment for her new establishment, she is forced to utilise her greatest asset - her daughter Lydia. Meanwhile, her rival Lydia Quigley is determined that Margaret's grand plans are thwarted. Period drama set in London in 1763, starring Samantha Morton and Lesley Manville

Review

Alison Graham

Bringing a welcome dash of bawdiness and a splash of colour, Harlots is the noisy, delightfully vulgar tale of a brothel in the London of 1763, a city where a woman’s only chance of economic advancement is to marry well or be a prostitute.

Its bawdy houses are teeming with shrieking harlots and run by canny, cruel businesswomen such as Margaret Wells and Mrs Quigley (Samantha Morton and Lesley Manville, it’s a great cast).

Mrs Wells plans to auction her youngest daughter’s virginity to the highest bidder, just as she did with her oldest daughter (Jessica Brown Findlay). But there’s a new morality in the air with religious crusaders on the warpath.
