Summary
Horror starring Sosie Bacon. Therapist Rose Cotter has a traumatising ordeal when one of her patients, who claims to be stalked by an ominous supernatural force, suddenly takes her own life during a session. Expanded from his 2020 short film Laura Hasn't Slept, writer/director Parker Finn's feature debut is an occasionally effective but mostly cliché-ridden excursion in horror. Sosie Bacon plays Rose, a psychiatric doctor whose life becomes a waking nightmare after she witnesses a traumatic incident involving a patient. When she realises her own life is in danger, Rose is sent down a rabbit hole as her investigation forces her to confront her dark past. Bacon is an engaging lead and Finn sometimes displays skill in creating a sense of impending doom, but Smile is far too reliant on fake-outs and jump scares - even if some are well-executed. The investigation aspect of the narrative is stretched rather thinly, and, sadly, many viewers will find themselves recalling a number of other films that have explored trauma through horror with more invention and originality.
