Summary

A princess faces over-familiar problems at home in this amiable but lacklustre animated musical fantasy. Rachel Zegler voices Ellian, a teenage royal whose mum (Nicole Kidman) and dad (Javier Bardem) are unlike other parents. When a dark cloud descended on them, they were turned into drooling (but cute) monsters. Directed by Vicky Jenson (Shrek), Spellbound follows Ellian's drawn-out quest to uncover the reason for the king and queen's makeovers. After Ellian trudges across a magical landscape, answers arrive in a twist that's quite mature yet heavily foreshadowed and thuddingly presented. Star voices including Jenifer Lewis and John Lithgow work hard to lift the film's spirits, but it's a losing battle against a script that's low on wit, sparkle and suspense - with no real nemesis to speak of, the story lacks stakes. Drawing on films from Brave to Frozen, the result fitfully perks up for the musical numbers, where veteran Disney composer and songwriter Alan Menken makes his presence felt.
