Although it boasts Southern sass, an à la mode cast and an esteemed director, Logan Lucky doesn't always hit the mark. Working from a screenplay by first-timer Rebecca Blunt, Steven Soderbergh delivers a caper closer to the Coens than to his Ocean's trilogy. It follows Channing Tatum's newly unemployed West Virginian who's keen to keep his daughter nearby after her mother threatens to move. In his desperation he plots to rob the Charlotte Motor Speedway, roping in his brother (Adam Driver), sister (Riley Keough) and an incarcerated explosives expert (Daniel Craig). There's a cartoonishness here, from concept to costume design, the heist is executed with aplomb and the script features choice one-liners. However, Soderbergh is better at injecting wry humour than he is at sustaining broad farce and Tatum is a touch sullen in the lead. Keough is excellent if underused, like the film's other female stars. Yet it's Craig that's the takeaway. The actor swaps the snug tailoring of Bond for prison duds and peroxide in a film where he finally gets to have some fun.
