Alan Bennett's 2018 play gets a wryly amusing, if sometimes creaky, film adaptation. The story is set around a fictional Yorkshire hospital that's affectionately known as "The Beth", short for "Bethlehem", and is run by Jennifer Saunders' no-nonsense but caring Sister Gilpin. While staff, locals and patients are protesting its proposed closure, the plot also circles the comings-and-goings at the hospital, with patients including Dame Judi Dench's former librarian and Sir Derek Jacobi's grammar-obsessed ex-teacher. While Saunders is the film's standout, the real emotional tug comes from David Bradley's ailing ex-miner, whose estranged son (Russell Tovey) is involved in the crackdown on the establishment. Directed by Richard Eyre (Notes on a Scandal), the film is slightly undermined by its narrative coincidences, while the fourth-wall-breaking finale - a well-meaning plea for the NHS - doesn't quite fit with what's gone before. Bennett's wit, though, remains as refreshing as ever.
