Max Copeman

Directing his 40th feature film at the age of 93, Clint Eastwood presents audiences with a moral dilemma in this old-fashioned and thorny legal thriller. The premise from screenwriter Jonathan Abrams could easily be taken from a John Grisham novel. Justin (Nicholas Hoult) is a journalist and father-to-be who, when called up to jury duty for a case about a woman who was killed when hit by a car, soon realises that he himself may be the killer. As the accused protests his innocence, does Justin sway the verdict to protect himself? And even then, could he live with the guilt? As Hoult wrestles with his conscience in the jury box, the courtroom drama is energised by a robust supporting cast, led by JK Simmons as another juror and Toni Collette as the prosecuting attorney. Despite the film's somewhat terse script and paperback plot, Eastwood's direction poses knotty and confronting questions that linger.
