Twenty-five years on from the original animated classic, Disney returns to the Pride Lands with a new version of The Lion King, this "live-action" remake constructed using realistic-looking CGI. It certainly keeps the faith with the original story of a lion cub who believes himself responsible for the death of his father - the benign ruler of an entire animal community - and who must then embrace his destiny for the good of all. In traditional animated form, this played out like Shakespearean drama, but while the pixelated update is a triumph of computer programming, it leaves little for the viewer's imagination to contribute. The result is impressive, true to the story, features all the much-loved characters and songs, and yet somehow it remains too cut-and-dried to engage our hearts. This will matter less to newcomers experiencing the dynastic saga for the first time, and everyone will surely be wowed that these creatures aren't actually real. However, as Tim Rice and Elton John's soul-stirring ballad asks "Can You Feel The Love Tonight?", the answer is, sadly, far from certain.
