A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Jennifer Lawrence goes back to her indie-movie roots for this nuanced New Orleans-set drama. She plays Lynsey, an army engineer who returns home after a traumatic brain injury in Afghanistan. Moving back in with her troubled mother (Linda Emond) and finding work as a pool cleaner, she's desperate to go back for another tour of duty, something her doctor advises against. The only bright spot is her blossoming friendship with James (Brian Tyree Henry), a car mechanic whose own past is also marked with emotional scars. Sensitively handled by theatre director Lila Neugebauer, Causeway holds back on the hysterics; Lynsey dropping a snow cone - a hint at the PTSD that's afflicting her daily life - is about as dramatic as it gets. The focus is the bond forged by two damaged people, staged without introducing a needless heart-mending romance. There are bumps in the road, but Lawrence and Henry act with tremendous authenticity in a story that probes deeply into the human need for kinship.
