Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

An outbreak of amnesia leaves sufferers wondering whether they want to rebuild their lives again in this fanciful Greek fable, shot before the Covid crisis but gaining a new currency in the aftermath of the pandemic. The narrative unfolds in an off-kilter world without cellphones, where analogue technology like tape recorders and Polaroid cameras facilitate the middle-aged protagonist's tentative steps towards recovery. Actor Aris Servetalis, stone-faced yet endearing, submits to seemingly random tasks set by his neurologists to form new memories, lending the proceedings an air of absurdist humour that recalls the early work of Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite). Writer-director Christos Nikou offers teasing hints of romance between Servetalis and a fellow sufferer, yet just as the plot starts running out of steam, the film drills deeper into the emotional disturbances behind this mysterious condition. This sets the seal on a surreal, unsettling affair, which affectingly reflects on the emotional connections essential to our wellbeing, and the concomitant pain of loss.
