Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Susan Sarandon's mother hen dominates this adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's much-loved novel about four impoverished sisters growing up during the American Civil War. Australian director Gillian Armstrong jettisons some of the schmaltz that adorned the earlier film versions, allowing Winona Ryder (who is superbly cast as the spirited Jo) to emote like mad. It may have been eclipsed by Greta Gerwig's 2019 take on the story, but still features a fine cast, including Claire Danes, Christian Bale and Kirsten Dunst in small roles.
