Six years on from Avengers: Endgame, Marvel regains its mojo with the help of an unlikely new super-team of failed heroes and jaded villains. The 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe boasts a welcome return to the action antics and thrills that made the Avengers films so entertaining. Indeed, it is the absence of the Avengers that looms large in the plot, much to the glee of Machiavellian power-grabber Valentina de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). The pawns in her shadowy schemes include Black Widow sibling Yelena Belova (a delightfully deadpan Florence Pugh), a disgraced Captain America wannabe (Wyatt Russell) and an intangible assassin (Hannah John-Kamen). Their first meeting is nearly their last until an intervention from slobbish super-soldier the Red Guardian (played with infectious gusto by David Harbour) and the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), who instructs the "defective losers" to team up or die. There are some cracking action scenes here but there is melancholy, too, as the group grapple with grief and regret while fending off a surprise adversary. Better known for thoughtful dramas like Robot & Frank (2012), director Jake Schreier opts for a muted look to reflect the trauma of the characters. However, he also produces a deft blend of fisticuffs, spectacle (the Mission: Impossible-style opening) and bluff repartee that harks back to the franchise's heyday. Welcome back, MCU!
