Indie horror maestro Ti West (The Innkeepers, The House of the Devil) turns his attention to the "hicksploitation" subgenre that gave us The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Wrong Turn, among other disreputable efforts. The plot pits the crew of a porn film against a creepy old couple in backwater 1970s America, and while that sounds a little icky, this is a quality enterprise. Mia Goth (Suspiria) and Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect) deliver strong lead performances, and there's a genuine interest in exploring the characters' inner lives - plus some searching conversations about the price of sexual freedom. As usual, West is in no rush to get to the action, taking time to conjure an atmosphere of rural decay through shots of creaky outhouses, suspicious locals and lurking 'gators. But none of this should deter casual viewers, as there's lashings of sex and gore, plus a few surprises along the way.
