Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Structured like an almost-continuous live stream, this US indie thriller sees an online influencer exploiting his job working on a ride-sharing app to murderous effect. Joe Keery (Stranger Things) gives a canny central performance, combining cheery bonhomie with a chilling absence of moral responsibility amid an escalating body count. However, he never quite convinces as a believably flawed human being and, as the action shifts between social media streams, police surveillance footage and static security shots, the zippy technical execution takes precedence over story. Certainly, the film makes a decent point about the dangerous self-absorption of a generation who live online, but we needed to care a bit more to give the film impact. Meanwhile, the cartoon violence and a "MeToo meets Black Lives Matter" subplot involving comedian Sasheer Zamata rather muddy the issues at stake.
