Routinely ignored by the BBC in favour of recycled puns about Mrs Slocombe’s pussy, Red Dwarf is once again revived by Dave with an inventive series 11 opener that doesn’t stint on the laughs. OK, so the premise is kind of influenced by Star Trek: First Contact, in that a Borg-like race travels to the past with the aim of influencing the future.
But the twist comes when Lister and co arrive in a skewed 1920s to find that technology and science – rather than booze – are under prohibition. Cue lots of jokes about speakeasies filled with Erlenmeyer flasks rather than bottles of illicit liquor and urban myths about Albert Einstein being a dejected wino carrying a ball of string around in a trolley.
It’s smart comedy that still finds room for a terrific nipple gag involving Kryten and jumper cables.
