In Season 11, an alternative USA where technology is banned spells trouble for Rimmer and Kryten, Lister has his kidneys removed and a spot of luck results in Rimmer getting a promotion.
Thanks to a supreme display of duplicity, Rimmer is promoted from technician to first lieutenant and takes approximately two minutes to be corrupted absolutely by the privileges of rank. Of course, Rimmer’s idea of leadership is a grotesque parody of power that results in him being segregated from his former crewmates in an exclusive officers’ club. Here, he’s surrounded by Rimmer clones churned out by a bio-printer – but don’t expect any good to come of Arnold’s rash actions.
As we’ve come to expect of this superior 11th series, there are some very inventive gags (the neat parallels to workplace printer jams are a treat), but an abrupt ending makes the episode ultimately feel slightly rushed.
