Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

In this pointless US remake of pulsating 2011 French thriller Sleepless Night, Jamie Foxx stars as a crooked cop with one night to return the drugs he stole from a dangerous gangster, in order to save his son. To make things worse, he also has to shake off a determined internal affairs officer (Michelle Monaghan) who's hot on his tail. At one point the villain of the story remarks "There's a right way of doing things, and a wrong way", and it seems as though everyone in this film chose the latter. Unlikeable characters make bizarre decisions, often motivated by reasons that aren't exactly clear. The only mercy is that the excruciating dialogue is often inaudible thanks to all the husky muttering. Foxx and Monaghan do their utmost with a plot that would struggle to fill an hour-long TV episode, with both doing enough to convince you that the chase is worth following. As the film limps to an unsatisfying finish, however, it's clear that both talented actors deserve better. Check out the original for a more exhilarating experience.
