Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Owen Wilson and Lake Bell star as parents desperate to get out of an unnamed Asian country in this thriller from director John Erick Dowdle (Devil, As Above, So Below). After some "Americans abroad" exposition, the expats and their two young children find themselves on the wrong side of a revolution in their new home and are thrust straight into a terrifying chase across the rooftops, pursued by bloodthirsty rebels who just want to kill foreigners in increasingly elaborate ways. Patchy storytelling and far-fetched scenarios take the sting out of the tale, while a remarkably passive Wilson is miscast in the everyman lead. One surprise treat is Pierce Brosnan, bizarre but fun in his fleeting appearance as a fellow expat (complete with a distracting cockney accent). Occasionally thrilling but mostly formulaic, it's a chase film that manages to make running for your life a dreary experience.
