Spinal Tap and Zoolander come together in a comedy take on the pop industry. Andy Samberg plays a pop star who is living the life as his solo second album is about to launch - with a pet turtle, a person who holds his drugs and a ready put-down of childhood friends/former band members. This "fauxumentary", vaguely modelled on the 2011 Justin Bieber film Never Say Never, is hugely funny in its first half before it eventually cools into submission. For anyone who knows the pop world, the plot is ridiculous enough to be both funny and real, with Like Bin Laden among the laugh-out-loud parody songs. It's spoiled by a happy-clappy conclusion, but appearances from Sarah Silverman and Joan Cusack, plus knowing cameos from Pink, Ringo Starr and Simon Cowell, prove the quality of the project's conception.
