Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Although it looks every inch the industry-standard gung-ho alien-invasion blockbuster, Edge of Tomorrow boasts a clever concept that sets it apart. Tom Cruise plays against type as a cowardly PR man for the Allies who's packed off to fight at the front, portrayed as a terrifying D-Day-style beach landing. Cruise is instantly killed, only to awake 24 hours previously and forced to play out this apocalyptic Groundhog Day again and again. However, the rebooted day allows him to train and second-guess the alien foe, as well as get to know Emily Blunt's special forces poster girl. Theirs is a bloodless romance and the action builds to an anticlimax, but the story brims with wit amid the banging and crashing. Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) also has fun with a platoon of Aliens-style "grunts", including Brits Jonas Armstrong, Charlotte Riley and Franz Drameh (Attack the Block), and he spins the reincarnation trope with thrilling momentum.
