Prime Video launches its multigenerational drama The House of the Spirits this month, with episodes to arrive rapidly on the streaming platform in April and May.
The series is based on the novel of the same name by Isabel Allende, which follows "three generations of women — Clara, Blanca, and Alba — in a conservative South American country shaped by class struggle, political upheaval, and magic".
Set across 50 years, Allende's book was partly inspired and frequently compared to Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, which was itself recently adapted for the screen at rival streamer Netflix.
This is the second attempt to bring The House of the Spirits to live-action, following a rather underwhelming 1982 take that enlisted A-list stars such as Meryl Streep, Antonio Banderas, Glenn Close and Jeremy Irons.
Although the cast of Prime Video's version may not be as internationally recognisable (yet), they seem to have done a better job shepherding this story to the screen, according to Allende herself.
The author, who serves as executive producer alongside Desperate Housewives alum Eva Longoria, said of the new adaptation: "When I saw the miniseries, I saw what it always should have been."
