Review

Alison Graham

I’ve come up with a Hinterland drinking game – whenever any character exchanges a significant glance with another character, have a tipple. I estimate you’ll be hammered in under ten minutes because everyone looks at everyone else in a meaningful way in this sullen, yet oddly engaging Welsh drama.

Tormented DCI Tom Mathias (Richard Harrington) can’t even walk down a flight of stairs without looking as if he’s weighed down by existential angst. He is also the weepiest TV cop in history. Man up, Tom, for goodness’ sake.

Still, if you are going to be unhappy anywhere it might as well be on the gorgeous Welsh coast (the cinematography is stunning), investigating the murder of an intense teenage girl.
