Steven Soderbergh may be Hollywood's most inventive and well-rounded film-maker, having worked in practically every major genre. Presence, his first foray into supernatural horror, is typically non-traditional. Told from the perspective of an unknown, unseen entity, this graceful haunted-house story unsettles with a sense of sorrow rather than blood and guts or bumps in the night. The plot sees a family, headed by parents Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan, gradually breaking down after moving into an old dark house. Soderbergh cleverly uses floating camerawork and long takes to evoke the spectre's point-of-view throughout, making for an intriguing and immersive tone. Moments of sheer convenience undermine David Koepp's screenplay, and the film's forlorn atmosphere is fatally punctured by one revelation that proves a bit much. But the tone is always well balanced. Light on frights but steeped in emotion, Presence is playful, sad and slyly funny all at once, and its mournful elegance is sure to age well.
