Summary

Psychological horror starring Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear. Following a personal tragedy, Londoner Harper drives out to the Hereford countryside for a spot of rest and recovery. However, Harper soon realises that everyone in her orbit is a man, each with the same face, and while some of these figures are harmless, others might be very dangerous indeed.

Terry Staunton

Jessie Buckley stars in this eerie thriller as grieving widow Harper, who retreats to an isolated country village after the death of her husband. She then begins to suspect she is being stalked, either by someone from her past or by various men in her new locale. Flashbacks to her former life suggest Harper's marriage wasn't always a happy one. But are Harper's memories playing tricks on her imagination, or is the sense of danger she feels unsettlingly real? Writer/director Alex Garland keeps the build-up of tension steady and assured (with the occasional nod to The Wicker Man), but his broader ruminations on toxic masculinity and its effects on women often lack forensic, fleshed-out examination. However, the narrative's occasional shortcomings are largely disguised by the power of the performances of Buckley and Rory Kinnear, who takes on multiple roles as the village's threatening male residents.
