Summary

The first three Scream films were planned as a trilogy, and this third outing for Ghostface and co wraps up the story with just enough style to satisfy - if not exhilarate - fans of the franchise. The hunting ground this time is Hollywood, where Dewey (David Arquette) is working as an adviser on the production of Stab 3, much to the astonishment of his reporter ex, Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox Arquette). When somebody starts hacking their way through the cast, Sidney (Neve Campbell) must decide if she's strong enough to come out of hiding and confront the ghosts of her past. The absence of Kevin Williamson is sorely felt in a script that lacks the bite of the previous films and grows goofier with every knife-happy minute. However, there is some charm to be found in the campy high jinks. Carrie Fisher shows up for a very funny cameo, while Parker Posey steals the film as the actor playing Gale in the movie-within-the-movie. Scream 3 often feels like a spectre of slasher movies past, but it features an engagingly prescient mystery about the dark side of Hollywood, and builds to an enjoyably tense climax in director Wes Craven's version of a haunted mansion.
