This somewhat chaotic musical variation on A Christmas Carol makes up for its lack of focus with energy and goodwill to spare. Will Ferrell plays the Ghost of Christmas Present, a member of a spectral society that specialises in redeeming "bad" people. He loves the challenge of his afterlife's work, but is Ryan Reynolds's amoral PR consultant really beyond help? Answers emerge amid some excessive but inventive musical set-pieces, including songs by The Greatest Showman's Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. While Ferrell and Reynolds aren't the strongest singers, there's no doubting their commitment, and Octavia Spencer provides strong vocal support as Reynolds's assistant. Director Sean Anders (Daddy's Home) spends too much time between songs developing the leads' bromance, and Reynolds's cynical schtick gets old. But there are surprises amid the film's sentimental beats, notably a frisky Victorian set-piece that provides just the spirit promised in the title.
