David Parkinson
Having already produced the Loretta Lynn biopic Coal Miner's Daughter, Bernard Schwartz here turned his attention to her friendly rival for the title "Queen of Country", Patsy Cline. The result is a film packed with fine acting and superb singing (provided, via record, by Cline herself). Unfortunately, the life story is pretty unremarkable, at least in the hands of writer Robert Getchell and director Karel Reisz. Consequently, the sparks between Jessica Lange and Ed Harris ignite nothing but their scenes together, giving the action a disappointingly staccato rhythm. Ultimately it does tug at the heartstrings, but not as much as it should.
