Thirteen-year-old Kaitlyn (Brooklynn Prince) is miserable. Her parents are newly divorced, her brother is depressed and her penniless mother is about to sell their house. In an attempt to stave off the sale, Kaitlyn hatches a plan to earn $100,000 by stealing, then selling, a famous racing pigeon. When the bird's obsessive owner (Brian Cox) tracks her down, the grumpy old man and the angsty teen slowly, inevitably bond. On paper, this might have been both a sweet coming-of-age tale and an interesting look at the world of pigeon-racing. On screen, however, Kaitlyn's never-ending, droning narration is soporific, and her sociopathic behaviour makes her a deeply unlikeable character. "I never knew how much someone could love a bird," she says at one point, with all the enthusiasm of someone doing their ironing. Only Cox seems to be enjoying himself, even if he's outshone by his feathery co-stars.
