In this haunting, occasionally disturbing London-set thriller, Bob Hoskins manages to convey some deeper emotion than his more usual screen thuggery, as the gangster's chauffeur who's madly in love with Cathy Tyson's detached, emotionally bruised prostitute. He brings rich pathos to a plot not overloaded with such feelings and was rewarded with a Golden Globe, a Bafta and an Oscar nomination for his performance. Michael Caine is also a revelation with his portrayal of Hoskins's seedy, serpentine boss, Mortwell. Neil Jordan directs with great flair and insight, and the photography from Roger Pratt lingers long in the mind. The film seems to capture a certain 1980s soullessness, but it's still a moving and thought-provoking experience.
