Foolproof

Ryan Reynolds heads the cast in this perky Canadian crime caper about three friends who get a kick out of planning foolproof robberies that they never actually commit. But their elaborate hobby puts them in a predictable yet entertaining pickle, when David Suchet's ruthless gangster blackmails them into doing a $20 million bond heist for real. Verve replaces originality as the derivative events unfold, with good dialogue and fun performances compensating for uneven characterisation and an increasing mass of plot holes. The central trio plays off each other well, though it's Suchet who ultimately steals the show - and gives the simple storyline bite - in a menacing turn reminiscent of Ben Kingsley in Sexy Beast.
