There's a lot more than banana hammocks and vigorous thrusting to Steven Soderbergh's surprisingly sweet-natured tale of Florida male strippers, though there is more than enough of both to satisfy its obvious target audience of women and gay men. Adam (Alex Pettyfer) is a naive 19-year-old introduced to the steamy world of stripping by superstar Mike (Channing Tatum). But while Adam sees glamour, money, women and the very definition of a good time, 30-something Mike recognises the shallowness of this baby-oil drenched burlesque, and, aided by Adam's sister Brooke (a wonderfully understated Cody Horn), begins to reassess his life. Magic Mike is beautifully shot and skilfully acted, and Tatum, in a genuinely star-making role, reveals not only glutes smooth enough to make your average baby green with envy but also an almost irresistible screen charm. Dramatically, however, the film is a little underpowered: apart from a somewhat lackadaisical foray into a Boogie Nights-style drug deal gone awry, not much of any interest actually happens, and there's no sense of the real sleaze that might well accompany a career in disrobing. Like its pneumatic performers, Magic Mike is a movie that doesn't seem willing to go all the way.
