The feature debut of director Ben Parker is a busy if ultimately tedious existential thriller, though he does show a talent for keeping things visually interesting with this high-concept, tight-space tale. If only his rather bland script, padded out with repetitive panic attacks, unhinged behaviour and naval procedures, didn't constantly dissipate the claustrophobic tension patchily built up in the one very confined location - The Aurora four-man submersible. Under the command of pilot Captain Mats (Force Majeure star Johannes Bah Kuhnke), the Cold War sub is on a secret recovery mission scouring the bottom of the Yellow Sea off the dangerous Korean Peninsula. When an explosion causes the sub to take on water, the crew must confront the stark reality not all of them will escape. The growing romance between Mats and his American commander (Charlotte Salt) adds a nice wrinkle to the standard histrionics, even as waterlogged clichés continually keep rising to the surface.
