Heartstopper Forever has finally arrived on Netflix, bringing Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie's (Joe Locke) story to an emotional close – at least on screen.

“There have been moments where I’ve had flutters of emotion,” Connor told The Guardian). “Will [Gao, who plays Tao, Elle’s on-off boyfriend] and I did our last scene together the other day, and I was like: ‘Oh f**k, this is quite upsetting.’ These characters have meant a lot to us over the years and we’ll always carry them with us.”

Locke echoed that, adding: “It’s more than friendship; it’s family,” mentioning WhatsApp groups among the cast and the fact the young actors lived together while filming seasons two and three. “I know these people will always be in my life.”

In an interview with Backstage, Locke expanded on his relationship with Connor, who he's "spent far more time with" than "pretty much anyone else in the last five years".

"The difference is that our connection is like brothers. We’ll defend each other until the day we die; that connection will never change. And when we’re Nick and Charlie, obviously it’s far more romantic. But it’s really nice to move that brotherly bond energy into the characters.

"It almost just happens—we don’t know how, we just do it. It’s easy and it’s comfortable."

Picking up after Heartstopper season 3, the story finds Nick, Charlie and friends on the cusp of major life changes as the end of school pulls them in different directions.

For Charlie and Nick, the building pressure risks tearing them apart for good, with a major argument at a party hosted by frenemy Harry (Cormac Hyde-Corrin) leaving them in a particularly perilous spot.

"We always knew that they were going to end up together," Locke told The Hollywood Reporter. "It was always going to be a happy ending. And I think we were always aware that they were going to break up for a bit at some point. I’m really glad that the film almost doesn’t sugarcoat any of that."

Connor went on to say that "one of the beauties of this ending is the fact that it doesn’t necessarily say that they’re going to be together forever".

"The slightly boring way would have been to flash forward, and they get married or something," he continued. "The beauty is that they may end up together, and they may not, but they’ve had this amazing formative time together. They have found a way to be a part and still connect.

"It is accepting the fact that we can actually exist independently, but we love being together even more.”

Director Wash Westmoreland told The Hollywood Reporter how the Heartstopper Forever soundtrack was a tool for making these scenes as tense as they could possibly be, complimenting some striking production design.

"Harry has always represented a more toxic side of their teenage world. We leaned into that by creating a kind of teenage manosphere," he explained. "A basement rave full of young men, pounding dubstep, vivid lighting and huge projections of Mako sharks."

It's not all aggressive EDM, though, with the Heartstopper Forever soundtrack also featuring contributions from familiar names heard in the original series, such as Orla Gartland, Sufjan Stevens and Billie Eilish.

Meanwhile, composer Adiescar Chase scores more hopeful, wistful melodies for the emotional final chapter.
