The Jackal Speaks

Summary

Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, better known globally as Carlos the Jackal, tells his story from the confines of a French high-security prison. He is the mastermind of some of the most audacious attacks of the 20th-century. Carlos talks about his childhood in Venezuela, his radicalisation, his operations across Europe and the Middle East, and his relationships with some of the era's most infamous figures

Review

Gabriel Tate

The trouble with figures like Carlos the Jackal — born Ilich Ramirez Sanchez — is not only the mythology that springs up around them, but also their burnishing of that legend. Built around a 2021 interview with the now-imprisoned terrorist and mass murderer, this Israeli-made Storyville doc attempts to separate fact from fiction. Born into a wealthy Venezuelan family, Sanchez’s introduction to Palestinian activists led him into a life of bombings, assassinations, extortion and kidnappings with ever-more strained claims of “freedom fighting”. His main mistake, suggests Sanchez, is that “I should have killed a few more people”.
