Gavin & Stacey: The Finale

Summary

After the cliffhanger ending of 2019, the sitcom returns one final time to find out whether Smithy said 'yes' - and what else is going on with the Shipmans and Wests. Seventeen years of marriage has found Gavin and Stacey in a bit of a rut so they are looking for ways to spice things up, while Nessa is launching a new business now that Neil the Baby is starting an apprenticeship with his dad. Bryn prepares for a trip to Essex and Gwen is behaving very strangely. Over in Billericay, Pam is stressing out about playing hostess - and a newly retired Mick practising his golf swings in the living room is not helping

Review

Frances Taylor

The BBC have revealed as much about this episode as Uncle Bryn and Jason have about their infamous fishing trip. We are as RT went to press all at sea. But then perhaps it’s not surprising they’re so keen to keep it wrapped up for a Christmas Day surprise. This is the most anticipated sitcom finale for decades. At least we’ll finally find out — five years on from 2019’s festive special — what happened next when Nessa (Ruth Jones) got down on one knee and asked Smithy (James Corden) to marry her.

What else do we know? Bryn (Rob Brydon) is preparing for a trip to Essex, Gwen (Melanie Walters) is behaving strangely and, if you want to feel very old, Neil the Baby is about to start an apprenticeship with his dad. But no matter what unfolds in Barry and Billericay this evening, one thing is certain. This will be the most-watched and talked-about TV event this Christmas. Cracking.

Documentary Gavin & Stacey: a Fond Farewell is on New Year’s Day at 7pm on BBC1.
