All the alarming facts and pressing moral and political issues are spelt out in this bleak documentary about the effects of global warming. Director Davis Guggenheim slickly transfers to film what is essentially a multimedia slide show from former US vice-president Al Gore. Gore's presentation makes it crystal clear how obdurate politicians remain in the face of overwhelming evidence and also exposes the lie that environmental protection policies are bad for the world's economies. Distilled from 30 years of research by Gore (from melting glaciers in Patagonia to the impact of Hurricane Katrina) and incorporating insights from his own private life (the near death of his son that acted as a catalyst for this passionate lecturing), the sobering message is relayed with engaging humour and gritty determination. Fear-mongering is not the motive here; uncovering the sources of wilful misinformation is. Gore plainly states that a future rife with killer tornados, floods and heat waves is avoidable - provided that constructive behavioural changes are made sooner rather than later.
