This adaptation of Willy Russell's successful stage play is a joy from start to finish, largely thanks to the lead actors' divine suitability for their roles. Julie Walters (making her feature-film debut) is great as the sassy, streetwise heroine who's eager for higher learning but smart enough to spot the foibles of her boozy tutor at a hundred paces. Michael Caine also enjoys one of his best ever roles as the drink-sodden, cynical lecturer on his own road to enlightenment. There were some who complained that Walters's portrayal patronised bright working-class girls, but she brings genuine warmth to the part and, like Caine, deservedly received a Bafta for her performance.
