Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Pitched between Cast Away and WALL-E, this derivative yet well-handled charmer is a post-apocalyptic fable with a twist, where AI represents man's best hope for survival. An avuncular Tom Hanks plays Finch, an inventor living with faithful mutt Goodyear and robot Dewey following a solar catastrophe. When a superstorm forces them to leave their bunker with Finch's klutzy new robot Jeff (Caleb Landry Jones) in tow, a bond soon develops between man and machine. Even if it's obvious where the story is headed, the chemistry between Hanks and Jones's motion-captured trainee dog-sitter brims with warmth. Director Miguel Sapochnik sustains the mood with care, delivering a serio-comic blend of sci-fi and road movie that's both sweet and soulful.
