A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Steve Morrissey

Stand-up comedian Aziz Ansari's feature debut (he writes, directs and stars) reaches into Hollywood's golden age for a comedy with echoes of Heaven Can Wait and It's a Wonderful Life. Keanu Reeves plays the bumbling angel who swaps the lives of a gig-economy drone (Ansari) and a venture capitalist (Seth Rogen) and, as punishment, gets busted down to planet Earth as a decidedly non-angelic dude. There are two different stories trying to co-habit here - three, once Keke Palmer is factored in as love interest, and four when it turns out her character is trying to unionise fellow members of the precariat. Frank Capra and Ernst Lubitsch, masters of this sort of thing, would probably have streamlined things a bit. But the casting is choice and Reeves is vastly entertaining as he takes shots at his own image, while Ansari's jokes about lives run ragged by apps, bots and endless demands to rate and review every interaction really hit the spot.
