David Bowie's spectacular career as both musician and actor is encapsulated via a dizzying mosaic of footage and archive recordings in this engrossing documentary. In an inspired twist, Bowie himself narrates the film, thanks to material gleaned from hours of interviews he gave to radio and television over the years. The patchwork portrait that emerges is of a driven, relentless and constantly inspired artist forever moving the goalposts as he explores the possibilities of his creativity. Director Brett Morgen's film benefits from a deep treasure trove of material to draw upon, thanks to the input of Bowie's close friend and producer Tony Visconti, who helps to dismantle and reassemble several of the star's best-known recordings (Heroes, Modern Love, Ziggy Stardust). The result is as inventive as Bowie's many hit singles and albums, a richly layered cinematic offering that utterly captivates.
