Jeremy Aspinall

In this slow-burning Scandi thriller from writer/director Eskil Vogt (Blind), a housing estate becomes an unlikely setting for a sinister battle of wills as a quartet of pre-adolescent children hang out one Nordic summer. Ida (Rakel Lenora Fløttum) is fed up with the demands of her older autistic sister Anna (Alva Brynsmo Ramstad), and so gravitates towards Ben (Sam Ashraf), a troubled loner who reveals he has paranormal powers. He's also angry and callous, feelings that intensify when he realises Anna has abilities, too. It may sound like an X-Men flick, but Vogt adopts a low-key approach to the depiction of telekinesis, telepathy and mind control, while Ben's coming-of-rage sequence is utterly chilling in its matter-of-fact handling. Genre gems like Village of the Damned, Scanners and Chronicle come to mind, but the young principals' superb, naturalistic performances keep the film on a strictly child's-eye level, and the result is truly haunting.
